perla batalla & my dad, my dog...

you know that saying -- "behind every good man is a good woman" -- or something along those lines... well, homegrown's first guest today personifies that sentiment... although technically she's an american artist, perla batalla got her career off on the right foot under the nurturing talent of canada's own leonard cohen... as a backup vocalist for cohen, she began to make waves for herself in the music biz and then moved on to her own solo success... in honour of the man that she says shaped her so much, batalla released a disc of cohen covers... she's set to take the yukon arts centre stage tonight to perform some of the great poet's hits, so homegrown caught up with her earlier in her tour to hear the tales behind their musical relationship...

back when homegrown was a swift one-hour summer program on CHON FM, yukon-based animator jay white popped by the studio to chat about his film, boar attack, which was nominated in the short cuts category at the 2007 toronto international film festival... now, white's been busy in vancouver presenting his latest project with the creative minds of boca del lupo at the push international performing arts festival... the presentation brings animation and performance art together to tell an interesting and unique tale of humans and animals... it's called my dad, my dog and it drops into the yukon art centre this week for a three-day run... white joins homegrown over the phone from vancouver to shed some light on the project and likely brag about the milder weather on the west coast...
