folk coffee nights & kim beggs...

with a definite chill in the air these months, the whitehorse folk society is providing yukoners with somewhere warm to go for a saturday evening... every first saturday of the month brings another edition of their coffeehouse nights at the united church in the downtown capital... paul davis is one of about a dozen volunteers that make the coffeehouse performances possible... davis tells homegrown what kind of talent you can find there, along with how much it costs to join in the fun...

yukon recording artist kim beggs is home for the holidays after travelling to ontario, saskatchewan and the u.s. to attend and showcase her folk style at a number of conferences... she's up for a western canadian music award for best roots album; she also garnered a nomination at the canadian folk music awards for best new artist... it's been a good year for the singer-songwriter, and now she's prepping to head to memphis in the new year with a small crew of yukon talent... beggs joins homegrown live in the studio to sing a track from her second album and share some of her recent experiences...

plus, throughout the show we'll listen to some of the best in canadian music for 2007 as decided upon by the many, many musical critics out there...

indigenous art & a new rendezvous queen...

the art world was buzzing this week, with the announcement of a $2-million endowment of funds to the national gallery of canada... the dollars were donated by the audain foundation, based out of vancouver... each and every penny of the endowment will go towards strengthening and encouraging the gallery's indigenous art collection... it's good news for some of canada's most valuable indigenous artists and great news for curator greg a. hill... he'll step forward to head up the collection from here, so homegrown spoke with him about what it all means...

while everyone has been shopping and trimming the tree, you might have lost sight of what other fine occasion is on its way to greet us yukoners... it's almost time to crown a brand new yukon sourdough rendezvous queen... to find out all about what sort of lady could take the top spot, homegrown welcomes 2007 reigning queen jacklyn stockstill in to the studio, along with queen mom, adrienne marsh, and contest administrator, marjie klein...

100 dresses, an artist in need & the longest night...

starting out a busy show, homegrown welcomes nicole bauberger live in the studio to chat about her new exhibit set to hit the walls of the yukon arts centre grotto... you could literally say it'll be a work in progress, as bauberger is set to paint 100 dresses for the display beginning this week... she's inviting one and all to head out to the gallery to join her while she creates the show -- and she'll share with us on homegrown how you can even join in...

plus, while we take a look at national arts and culture news, we'll also hear about a fundraiser happening this afternoon to benefit a local artist and her family... jeanine baker and her family were recently devastated by vandalism, which destroyed what was to be their new live-in studio, camper and their pick up truck... harreson tanner, from the yukon artists @ work, will join homegrown on the line to inform us all on how we can help the bakers...

the hours of sunshine continue to fade here in the territory, as we close in on december 21 -- the winter solstice... it's also the time to take in the sweet sounds of the longest night ensemble... the annual event brings songs and storytelling together on the yukon arts centre stage... artistic director and musical mastermind, dave haddock, will join homegrown live in the studio to tell us all about what to look forward to from this year's run of the show -- and perform live...

arts for AIDS & 'tis the season for the nutcracker...

yesterday was world AIDS day -- a day that brought together a local health clinic with yukon artists to help raise money and spread awareness of the disease... we'll chat a bit about the event that took place at the yukon artists @ work building, and find out where you can head today to pick up some more artistic christmas gifts in the territory... also, a spruce carver of northern and southern tutchone ancestry has been selected to create a piece for the new shipyards park building -- homegrown will tell you in a local arts rundown...

as a little girl, i always took in the national ballet's presentation of the nutcracker... the story of clara and the land of sweets was the perfect representation of holiday magic... rebecca reynolds, along with young dancers grayson and odessa from the northern lights school of dance, will join homegrown live in the studio to talk about the school's upcoming performance of the christmas classic...

D.I.Y. crafts & the voice of hammerhead...

when i saw celia mcbride's play, "so many doors", i was moved to tears and was talking about it days later... celia joined homegrown on an earlier to program to talk about the production which she wrote and starred in on the yukon arts centre stage... but showcasing its success didn't end in whitehorse... moira sauer, another star of the show, joins homegrown live in the studio to talk about what happened when the play hit ottawa to present in front of production buyers...

cozy cottons & a few good photographers...

just like a little black dress, a plain white tee is a staple fixture in any wardrobe... now there's a new place to look for that simple separate with climate clothing, a new line of cotton garments... ciara stick is the shop's manager and highlights not only their extremely reasonable price points, but also lets yukoners know what they can look forward to with the line...

indian and northern affairs canada is looking for aboriginal photographers to take a unique national project... the department wants to build a team of artists to travel to a variety of aboriginal communities across canada and capture the way of life and conditions in urban and rural visuals... INAC's dan bevin has been researching the differences throughout the nation and is looking at the photography as the next step in conveying his findings... he tells homegrown just what they're looking for and how an exhibition of the works will come together...

"so many doors" & a museum true or false...

yukon playwright celia mcbride presents one of the most raw and emotional productions to hit the stage in the territory... two couples deal with the loss of their children in the heavily dialogue-driven play, "so many doors"... the performance is set to open this week at the yukon arts centre, so homegrown sat down with celia and stage director kelly thornton to find out more about it...

heritage festival & it's play time at the guild hall...

whitehorse is prepping for its first ever heritage festival... deb jutra, the festival coordinator, says participants can travel across the world, in the comfort of the territory's welcoming waterfront next summer... performances, food and more will be on display for people to use all their senses and explore different cultures... but, in order to make it all happen the organizing crew is looking for your input...

get a taste of halloween a little early this year, with the guild hall's season kick-off performance, the dark of the moon... the production is a gothic tale of love and witch people... dean eyre, producer with the company, tells homegrown about the unique performance, and gives a sneak peek on what's to come at the guild...

local art tales & aptn "digital drum"...

alice park-spurr opened up an exhibit titled "raven tales" this past friday at arts underground in downtown whitehorse... the works are delicate paintings with both soft and extravagant colour schemes juxtaposing both the literal and the more abstract interpretations of viewing ravens in their habitat...
*part of the proceeds from sales of the exhibited artwork will go towards the ted harrison artist retreat

wayne clark, manager of new media with APTN, tells me more about digitaldrum.ca... it's a new online portal for youth to connect with their culture and histories through elders' stories and so much more...

plus, the 2nd annual polaris prize is set to be given away in toronto tomorrow night... it pits some of the best names in canadian music against each other... a jury of journalists, blogger and broadcasters make the ultimate choice as to who had the best album in the previous year... we'll take a look at who is in the running for the $20-grand jackpot
